Good Words

This poem comes out of an observation about our society’s struggle to have charitable conversations on a variety of subjects. The reasons why have been outlined in many other blogs, articles and podcasts--across a wide landscape of opinions and rhetoric.
I do long for the ‘around the kitchen table’ discussions where people are open to listen to others and learn from others. Not that our strongly held opinions will fully change (maybe sometimes), but let’s make an effort to understand each other. And all try to be deliberate about what comes out of our mouths….me included. (James 3:7-10)
Good Words
Looking for the good words
where have they gone?
A short smile-like phrase
can change the color of talk
From dusk to dawn.
The heart sends the words
And then it’s too late
The Light brings truth
And can humble the hate.
So much knowing,
Not much hearing
Right, wrong, left, middle.
Keep it to the main thing,
Love the Only King.
Love the others
Nations, tribes and creeds.
Kind words, good words
Follow anywhere He leads.
True words, faith words
Do the greater thing.
Lay down your life--your rights
Then just watch what He’ll bring.
I will, I can, I want to, I’ll try
to brighten the discourse
Love till I die.
We’ll fix the crisscross
and reach for a new day.
The King’s gonna do it all anyway.
